How AM Addresses Supply Chain Gaps
and Distributed Manufacturing
When it comes to the production of parts, AM is a different animal. It can produce an unlimited range of parts in a single batch without paying a significant price. Manufacturing new designs quickly is also possible. Production is not as fast and inexpensive for large quantities when tooling is used, but its advantages can be compelling in specific cases.
Capital expenditures required of traditional manufacturing is partly why most of it is centralized. This is much less so with AM, making it easier to distribute production capacity, as is the case for producing face shields, masks, nasal swabs, and other parts in response to the current pandemic. AM is changing the rules of supply chain management, causing companies to rethink their supplier strategies, especially for new types of designs and products.
